Thirty traits of being an Empath

Myth:  There are 30 Traits of Being an Empath or Symptoms of Being an Empath

No.

There is only one trait that identifies one as an empath.  That is the capacity to feel other people’s emotions.  It is a trait, not a symptom. While this gift doesn’t operate or exist in isolation–because nothing does–being a psychic empath has little to do with ‘symptoms’ listed in the regurgitated google lists.

Being an empath doesn’t preclude you from being:  precognitive, creative, overwhelmed, have back and belly issues, always taking up for the underdog,  an addict or overweight, creative, love animals and nature, a truthseeker or introverted, unable to buy things that have been previously owned, moody/shy/aloof/disengaged/angry, emotionally unavailable, unable to handle living in a city or being in crowds, etc and ad nauseum.

In fact, most people who self-identify as ’empath’ are not.  Because you are sensitive and can relate well to others does not make you an empath.  Everybody has the capacity to show empathy (although some will argue sociopaths & narcissists cannot & I argue some empaths are sociopaths & narcissists).

Again, because nothing operates in isolation and we are human, any and all of the above come with being alive.  Period.

Empaths come from every walk of life, have every ‘symptom’ of living, are also ath-holes, liars and cheats, violent & sneak into the 15 items line with 50.  They just also happen to have the capacity to truly feel another person’s energy.  Not guess what someone else is feeling, not imagine you know what another is feeling, not ‘just knowing’.  Here’s an example:  You hop into an elevator.  A very handsome man follows suit.  The elevator stops.  Between floors.  And stays there.  The single, straight, handsome, obviously employed gentleman who said good morning to you as you entered the car begins to sweat.  First a thin veil above his lip.  Then full-facial sheen of white-panic.  He’s gripping his briefcase as if his life depends on it.  Your own heart starts racing and not in a lustful sort of way.  Skin & throat constrict along with the walls. Air appears to disappear.  Ceiling & floor begin to converge.  You both begin to feel green around the gills (so much for the date potential, right?!)  You’re a spelunker eriod. and can cave crawl like a snake. You revel in places that skeeve others out! How is it that you can be claustrophobic!?  That is a psychic empath.

Are we effected by other energies, too?  You betcha and I’ll get to that next week.    But for now, ask yourself only one question:  Do I actually feel other people’s energies or am I projecting my own onto others?  Then, trust the answer.  That’s it.

  1. So, do you mean to say that most people who you talk to regarding being an empath are merely self-diagnosing based on those regurgitated google lists? If I answered yes to the fact that I can and do feel others’ emotions, and am not merely projecting, does that mean I qualify as a “true empath” in your eyes, or I just think I am?
